Uncle Phil's Self-Efficacy

Self-efficacy is a psychological concept developed by renowned psychologist Albert Bandura. It refers to an individual's belief in their ability to accomplish specific tasks, achieve goals, or handle challenging situations successfully. In other words, it's the confidence and belief in one's ability to perform actions or tasks to attain desired outcomes effectively. Self-efficacy plays a significant role in motivation, behavior, and personal development. As previously discussed, Phil is a lawyer running for the position of LA District Attorney, where his campaign was an uphill battle. He faced opponents with years of political experience, but Phil's unwavering belief in his ability to make a positive impact set him apart. He knew that having a growth mindset allowed him to learn from experiences, adapt to new challenges, and persevere through adversity. Generally, when people adopt a growth mindset, they have the sense that the more effort they put in, the more they will learn, grow, and develop, and the better or higher will be their personal qualities be. Throughout his campaign, Phil realized that Black voters felt disconnected from him. Rather than conceptualizing it as an issue, he viewed the challenge as an opportunity to build with the community. Phil decided to attend a community-wide picnic to engage with the community, hoping to make good impressions, especially with Reverend Lamonte, who is highly revered and influential to the community at large. After hours of mingling and conversing, many voters, including Reverend Lamonte, supported Phil.

Self-efficacy is often situation-specific. A person may have high self-efficacy in one area of life and lower self-efficacy in another. It varies depending on the task or context. The aforementioned exemplifies Phil's high self-efficacy in his professional life. However, his self-efficacy didn't appear to be as high in being a supportive husband. Early in his marriage, Phil told Vivian, an artist, that she no longer had to work so that she could focus on her craft. While she appreciated it at the time, she now resented him for it, as she wished he had told her not to quit. She later shared that she enjoyed spending time with Reid, a peer, because he made her feel so alive due to how he viewed her art. Although Phil's self-efficacy wasn't as high in his marriage as in his career, it was high enough to be motivated to make the change Vivian needed to see. To start, he assured her that when it came to her art, no one was a bigger fan than him, and he was proud to be by her side at every show. He made a new goal to change his behavior so that his words matched his actions. Self-efficacy is a vital concept in psychology that relates to an individual's belief in their ability to accomplish tasks and achieve goals. We see that Phil's motivation, behavior, and personal development can vary from one context to another. However, building and maintaining healthy self-efficacy beliefs can increase confidence, motivation, and success in various aspects of his life.
